Hope and optimism are not the same thing. A person who is optimistic sees the glass half full, believes that everything will work out for the best, somehow. This is an in-born personality trait, and a good one – as long as it is grounded in reality!
Hope has a different quality. Hope is grounded in God – in God’s nature and purpose. Hope gives us courage and strength and endurance and joy. The hope we call upon in Advent is the confidence that the words we pray in the Lord’s Prayer are true – “thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. We have hope that God’s goodness and justice and beauty will become as real in our lives on earth as they are in the fullness of God’s presence we call heaven. – VGM+
