Dear Friends in Christ,
Today’s news is full of talk about Hurricane Joaquin. While it now looks as though the storm will head out to sea, there is still the chance of lots of rain and some wind. For us that means possible flooding and downed trees, and perhaps power outages. While it seems that any effects in New Jersey will be late Sunday and Monday, please keep a watch on the safety of travel. If the Church schedule has to be effected in any way, I’ll post notices on the parish website, the Facebook page, and leave a voice message on the answering machine, and send an e-mail…assuming we have power! Please remember to check on your neighbors – particularly if they are elderly or live alone.

This Sunday’s 10 am service will be a Family Service. All children will go to worship (no Sunday School), there will be a children’s homily, and prayers for birthdays and anniversaries. This will also be the first time our new Small Saints’ choir debuts, along with the Junior Choir! Come and support some of our youngest parishioners. We’ll baptize and welcome into the “household of God” Kathryn Velloso. And at 5 pm is our annual Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis. A great day all around!
There are lots of things coming up in October. Please take a look at the announcements below, especially:
  • Argyle’s Fish & Chips (“Fish Fright”) – Fun & Fundraising
  • Blessing of the Animals – Worship and Music
  • Community Art Show – Events
  • A Christening Party – Events
  • “Quiet Evening” Mini-Retreat & Compline - Formation

HELPING HANDS
Knitting for Seafarers – All Saints’ has a dedicated group of volunteers who knit scarves and caps for  Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas-at-Sea ministry. If you are interested in knitting for this ministry, please speak to Janet Mansfield. She can give you directions and yarn, and then you work on the project on your own time. Your gift will help keep a seafarer warm this winter!

STEWARDSHIP
“Stewardship us all that we do, with all that we have, all of the time” – this is one of the classic definitions of Christian stewardship, how we care for what God has given us with glad and generous hearts. Over the next six weeks our Sunday bulletins will include reflections from the Episcopal Network for Stewardship, written by various lay people, clergy, and bishops. Please take these inserts home to read, as you begin to reflect and pray about how you will support God’s mission in and through All Saints’ Church for 2016. Thanks!

FOR ALL THE SAINTS
October 6, William Tyndale, Translator of the Bible, 1536.
“Change, even the most innocent and constructive, comes hard to men and societies. When William Tyndale, a careful and competent scholar and priest, prepared a translation of the Bible into English, he suddenly found himself treated as a scoundrel and a radical, even by those from whom he had expected the most support, the intellectuals and churchmen of England.
At Oxford, as a student, and at Cambridge, as a teacher, he had found great truth and guidance for his life from the scriptures, which were then available only to those who could read Latin, or in the partial and sometimes inaccurate version of John Wycliffe. Tyndale wanted to make the Bible available to the English in their native tongue. When his bishop got word of the project, he chastised Tyndale for such revolutionary activity and eventually made things so uncomfortable for the scholar that he had to leave England and flee to Germany, where the first edition of the Tyndale version of the Bible was published.
In spite of Tyndale's piety, scholarship, and good intentions, his work brought nothing but wrath from the English authorities. He was captured, tried as a heretic and schismatic, strangled, and publicly burned at Vilvorde, Belgium, in 1536.
Help us to proclaim your eternal Word in our time with bravery and clarity. Amen.” ~ Lesser Feasts and Fasts
Question for reflection: How does the Bible offer truth and guidance in your life? How does the Holy Spirit speak to you through the words of Scripture?
+ + + + + + + + +
Sunday, October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis. In honor of the things he valued, and particularly in light of the news of yet another school shooting, here is the Prayer of St. Francis.
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is
hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where
there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where
there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where
there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to
be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is
in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we
are born to eternal life. Amen. ~ Book of Common Prayer, p. 833
And a link to a hymn whose words are also attributed to Francis (All creatures of our God and king):
