WORSHIP and MUSIC
All Saints’ Sunday, November 2 is our parish feast day. As always, we will begin both services with the chanting of the Necrology, the names of members of the parish and other loved ones who have died in the past year, and those you wish to have remembered. Please e-mail or call the Parish Office by October 27 with the names of those to be included in this year’s prayer.
All God’s Children, our monthly service for special needs kids and their families, meets the third Sunday of each month; next service is October 19 at 12 noon. We welcome the community to this non-denominational Christian service designed to engage children with Autism, ADHD, ADD, Down syndrome or any other developmental, emotional or physical challenges. Please extend an invitation to those who might be interested; all are welcome! Contact Mother Vicki with questions.
Altar Guild is the ministry group that sets up the altar for worship and cares for the linens, vessels, etc. Members serve on a team once a month, and for special services. New members are welcome and encouraged. In particular, the Altar Guild is looking for someone to oversee maintaining our stock of candles (ordering, replacing, cleaning the candlesticks and processional torches). If you are interested or want more information please speak to Liz Gorny.
Save the date! December 7 at 4 pm we’ll have a festive Advent Evensong to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Mother Vicki’s ordination to the priesthood, followed by a Parish Pot-Luck Supper. Put the date on your calendar now.

FOR ALL THE SAINTS – Each week when there is a Saint’s day, a Prayer Book holy day, or a commemoration of a faithful witness in the Episcopal Church calendar, I’ll include a brief biography of one of the people being commemorated. The write-up will be taken from Holy Women, Holy Men (the successor to Lesser Feasts and Fasts). I hope you enjoy these. We learn from the life and faith of those Christian s who have gone before us, and see, perhaps, different ways of being faithful to Christ.
The person being remembered today (Oct. 9) is Wilfred Thomason Grenfell, Medical Missionary, d. 1940.
“Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell was born in Cheshire, England in 1865, the second of four sons of the Reverend Algernon Sidney Grenfell, headmaster of Mostyn House School, Parkgate, and his wife Jane Georgina Hutchinson. While studying medicine at the London Hospital Medical School, he came under the influence of American revivalist Dwight L. Moody. An athlete skilled in boxing, cricket, rugby, and rowing, he was an early exponent of the “muscular Christianity” made famous by Charles Kingsley.
In 1887, following his medical qualification, he joined the Royal National Mission to Deep-Sea Fisherman as a medical missionary, serving in Iceland and the Bay of Biscay. During a visit to Labrador in 1892, Grenfell was appalled by the near-starvation, poverty, and ill health of the British workers there. Devoting himself to their nurture and improvement, be built the first hospital of the Labrador Medical Mission in 1893, eventually opening boarding schools, hospital ships, clothing distribution centers, and the Seaman’s Institute at St. John’s, Newfoundland, often with money he raised himself with speaking tours and books. Several of his books about Labrador and his religious books appealed to those with whom he worked due to his modest and simple style.
In 1912, he organized the International Grenfell Association, with branches in Newfoundland, the United States, and Canada, and this organization supported his work and ministry for the remainder of his career. Grenfell retired from his work in 1935 due to ill health. He died in Vermont in October of 1940.” ~ Holy Women, Holy Men

Sailor's Paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift.
He lighteth me across the dark waters.
He steereth me in the deep channels.
He keepeth my log.
He guideth me beneath stars of his holiness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I sail 'mid the thunders and tempest of life,
I shall dread no anger, for thou art with me;
Thy love and thy care, they shelter me.
Thou preparest a harbour for me in the homeland of eternity.
Thou anointest the waves with oil
My ship rideth calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight shall favour me on the voyage I take,
And I will rest in the port of God forever. ~ from the Mission to Seafarers, Canada
