This Week @ All Saints - February 3, 2012

Dear Friends in Christ,

I have some sad news and some happier news.  The sad news is that Rosemarie Posella (mother of Anthony and mother-in-law of Stephanie, grandmother of Carly and Leah) died last week.  Her funeral was in Newtown, PA this past Thursday.  Rosemarie had a prolonged battle with cancer and was on our prayer list for many months.  Stephanie expressed her thanks for all the prayers. Now it is the family who needs prayer and support in their grief.

The happier news is that Deacon Bill Bailey sends everyone his best.  He’s continuing to receive chemotherapy and has good days and not-so-good days.  When he goes to the hospital for treatment he always wears his clerical collar. He’s says it’s a quiet visual witness that God is there, in the midst of both suffering and healing.  On Bill’s good days he’s able to do some pastoral visiting with St. Peter’s parishioners. Bill and Evelyn are very grateful for all the cards and phone calls from All Saints’ folk.

This Sunday, February 5…Lots of Special Things…Please Keep Reading!

Family Service @ 10 am – All children come to worship with their families.  There will be birthday and anniversary prayers, youth lectors, a dramatic reading of the Gospel, a children’s homily, and a somewhat modified format to engage the children more fully.  We’d like feedback on how you and your children respond to the service.

Souper Bowl Sunday-- Our Rite-13 class will be collecting canned goods and cash donations for the Food for Friends pantry, at both services. This is a national effort for teens to make a difference for hungry people.  Please help us fill up our baskets and soup pots. Thanks!

Vestry Member Commissioning - at both services (depending which service the Vestry members attend). We’ll also formally thank our two Vestry people who have gone off, or are rotating off – Carol Berry and Mary Pizza.

Charlie White’s Birthday – Sunday is Charlie’s 87th birthday, and we’ll toast him at coffee hour.  Please join us!

Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Homeless Shelter is now called Family Promise of Morris County – same program, same location at the Shrine of St. Joseph, same people being helped to put their lives back together.  We had a wonderful group from All Saints’ turn out when we served at the shelter in January.  It will be our turn again on Friday, March 2. If you can shop, cook, serve or stay overnight, please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex, or speak to Steve Leisch.  Thanks!

Women’s Book Group is reading The Dirty Life by Kristen Kimball, who gave up her city life as a writer to start an organic community farm with her husband.  The group will meet on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 pm in the Rath House.  Come for good conversation and fellowship – no gardening or farming experience required!

Inquirer’s Class for Adultsmeets onWednesdays at 7:30 pm in the Rath House. There will be three more meetings: 2/8, 2/29 and 3/7. Whether you are new to All Saints’ or the Episcopal Church, or are a long-timer and want a refresher, you are welcome to come and learn what our Church stands for, how it expresses Christian faith, its history and organization.  If you are interested in being confirmed or formally received into the Church from another Christian tradition this is the class for you!  Please speak to one of the clergy if you would like to know more.

Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras – Our kitchen is still under construction so we will not have the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper this year…it’s on sabbatical until next year! However, we WILL celebrate the Last Sunday after Epiphany at Coffee Hour on February 19 – Mardi Gras beads for all!  Come and party!

Lent is Coming: Ash Wednesday is February 22 with Ashes and Eucharist at 9:30 am and 7:30 pm. And back by popular demand….Taizé Services for Lent! Wednesdays at 7 pm, starting February 29. Half an hour of candlelight, chanting, silence, Scripture and resting in the presence of God.

Lenten Arts Workshop for Kids – Saturday, February 25, 9:30-11 am. Songs, Bible story, games, craft project – all for Lent.  For ages PreK-Grade 6 (and older kids can help!).  Bring a friend, and sign up on the sheet in the Narthex.

Save the date…March 25 – Bishop Mark Beckwith will be making his parish visitation with us on that day at the 10 am service.  Please plan to be here.  Bishop Beckwith will preach, celebrate the Eucharist, lead an Adult Forum, meet with the Vestry, and learn from us all the good things that are happening at All Saints’!

Stewardship is partnership with God.

Lord, help me now to unclutter my life,
to organize myself in the direction of simplicity.
Lord, teach me to listen to my heart;
teach me to welcome change, instead of fearing it.
Lord, I give you these stirrings inside me,
I give you my discontent,
I give you my restlessness,
I give you my doubt,
I give you my despair,
I give you all the longings I hold inside.
Help me to listen to these signs of change, of growth;
To listen seriously and follow where they lead
Through the breathtaking empty space of an open door.
~ from Celtic Daily Prayer: Prayers and Readings from the Northumbria Community

Blessings,
