HELPING HANDS
Knitting for Seafarers – All Saints’ has a dedicated group of volunteers who knit scarves and caps for Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas-at-Sea ministry. If you are interested in knitting for this ministry, please speak to Janet Mansfield. She can give you directions and yarn, and then you work on the project on your own time. Your gift will help keep a seafarer warm this winter!
Food Pantry Update – We are having our site inspection for our partnership with the Community Food Bank of NJ on Sept. 28. Soon we’ll be able to purchase non-perishable food directly from the Food Bank at a cost of $.09-$.16 a pound. Some of that food will come to the Parish House and be made into take-out bags for the homeless in Dover – a hands-on project for parishioners to be involved in. Kitchen and pantry staples will be purchased by us and transported directly to the pantry in Dover for those with cooking facilities. In the meantime, please continue to bring your food donations and leave them in the basket by the front door of the Church. Thank you! Your efforts are helping to feed hungry people.
STEWARDSHIP
Financial Update – we appreciate and need all of your pledge contributions and non-pledged donations! If you have been away over the summer or have gotten behind, please try to bring your pledge up-to-date. Everyone’s contribution is valuable and important. To be clear, the Rummage Sale estimated income is already anticipated in our budget. We are very grateful for a significant contribution that was received this week, and some building rental income came in that was a bit more than we had anticipated. But we still need everyone to do their share. Supporting the mission and ministry at All Saints’ is the responsibility of everyone who calls this their spiritual home. Thank you!

FOR ALL THE SAINTS
September 20, John Coleridge Patteson and his Companions, Bishop of Melanesia, Martyrs, died 1871
“The death of Bishop Patteson and his companions at the hands of Melanesian islanders, whom Patteson had sought to protect from slave-traders, aroused the British government to take serious measures to prevent piratical man-hunting in the South Seas. Their martyrdom was the seed that produced the strong and vigorous Church which flourishes in Melanesia today.
Patteson was born in London, April 1, 1827, of a Devonshire family. He attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he took his degree in 1849. After travel in Europe and a study of languages, at which he was adept, he became a Fellow of Merton College in 1852, and was ordained the following year.
While serving as a curate of Alphington, Devonshire, near his family home, he responded to Bishop G. A. Selwyn’s call in 1855for helpers in New Zealand. He established a school for boys on Norfolk Island to train native Christian workers. It is said that he learned to speak some twenty-three of the languages of the Melanesian people. On February 24, 1861, he was consecrated Bishop of Melanesia.
On a visit to the island of Nakapu, in the Santa Cruz group, Patteson was stabbed five times in the breast, in mistaken retaliation for the brutal outrages committed some time earlier by slave-traders. In the attack, several of Patteson’s company were also killed or wounded. Bishop Selwyn later reconciled the natives of Melanesia to the memory of one who came to help and not to hurt.” ~ Holy Women, Holy Men
Question for reflection: Whom do you feel called by God to protect or stand up for?

As we think about the Rummage Sale, remember that one of its ministries is helping us de-clutter so that we can enjoy and inhabit what is truly important.
As Jesus said: ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust - consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust -consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
