Dear Friends in Christ,
At the beginning of this week the clergy of the diocese gathered at our annual Clergy Conference at the Shawnee Inn in the Delaware Water Gap. It was our first in-depth with our new Bishop Carlye Hughes. Our time together was low-key and restful, focusing on getting to know one another. My experience of Bishop Carlye is that she is a person of deep prayer and delight in God, a “straight-talker” when it comes to matters of discipline and administration, and genuinely interested in knowing the people and churches of the diocese, trusting that God has a good purpose for us all, together. Thank you for keeping her, and All Saints’, in your prayers.

If you are making a contribution to those displaced by the fire in Dover, please bring new socks, underwear, and gift cards to Walmart or Target to church on Sunday. At this point, the most needed items are gift cards in any amount. Thank you!

Finally, I’ll be out of the office Monday and Tuesday of this week as part of a team of trainers for diocesan clergy at Crossroads, our diocesan camp and conference center in Port Murray (Warren County). As always, if you have an emergency, please call my cell phone.

Here are the week’s announcements. In particular, please see:
  • Trunk or Treat this Sunday (Parish Life)
  • Fish & Chips Dinner and Historical Society Show (Parish Life)
  • All Saints' Day Necrology (Worship)
  • Pledge Cards (Stewardship)
  • WW I Service of Peace & Remembrance (Worship)
  • Grateful Gathering: Murder Mystery Dinner Night (Parish Life)
FUN & FUNDRAISING

We still need help in the following ways: decorate the room, set tables, make up iced tea/lemonade, take tickets at the door, make up plates & pack take out bags. Please be sure to put your name on the sign-up poster in the Narthex, or respond to this e-mail, or speak to Jackie Sullivan. Thanks!

Nov. 1st, 7:30 pm - the Long Hill Historical Society will host The Letter with our own Laurie Gaulke. The Letter is a talk/one woman show about Mary Hudspeth Benson (pictured above) --one of All Saints’ founding members and a witness at the Lincoln assassination trial.
What’s so interesting and important about Mrs. Benson? She was a woman of rare courage and holy boldness. She was a social reformer in Jersey City (like Jane Addams) who worked with issues of juvenile justice, working conditions for street-car drivers, and children from poor Italian immigrant families. When her son Robert S. Hudspeth, a NJ state Senator, bought a summer home in Millington c. 1890, she came with him and became part of the group of local people who wanted to start an Episcopal Church in Millington. In 1903 Bishop Edwin Lines was consecrated as the new bishop for the Diocese of Newark, and in his address he shared his vision to build new churches where there were new lines of transportation. Mary Benson heard about the vision, and called upon Bishop Lines in Newark, inviting him to come and meet with the Millington group. In a very real way, All Saints’ is the direct result of a vision and holy persistence! But before all that, Mrs. Benson was a witness for the prosecution at the Lincoln assassination trial – a fascinating connection to our national history.
The show will be held in the Church, is free and open to all. Come and invite a friend!

ShopRite gift cards are available in $25 increments. Buy gift cards at the parish office or on Sundays to purchase your groceries. It does not cost you any more than what you would have spent at the store and 5% goes to All Saints’ ministries. Cards are usually available at Church on Sundays. Please speak to Barbara Barbeau.

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
The Seven Practices of the Way of Love:
Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest – The fourth spiritual practice in The Way of Love is WORSHIP. When we worship, “we gather with others before God. We hear the Good News of Jesus, give thanks, confess, and offer the brokenness of the world to God. As we break bread, our eyes are opened to the presence of Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are made one body, the body of Christ sent forth to live the Way of Love.”

The practice of gathering week by week on Sundays - the Lord’s day, the Day of Resurrection – is the primary practice of worship. Some people find it valuable to worship at other times, too, such as at our Thursday 7 a.m. service, and at special holy days throughout the year. When we come to worship we are there for ourselves and for God, but we are also there for others who need our prayers and presence as the Body of Christ is strengthened.

Here are some things to ponder as you reflect on your practice of worship:
• What is your favorite Sunday or other service of the Church year? Why?
• What is your favorite hymn? Why? (What is your least favorite hymn? Why?)
• What is the most meaningful part of a worship service for you? Why?
• Think about a time you experienced God’s presence in a worship service.
• What is your favorite way to worship God outside of Church?
• What communal worship practices move you to encounter God and knit you into the body
of Christ?

And here is a setting of the traditional spiritual “Walk together children” https://youtu.be/ZOlFxsJcELw
Blessings, Vicki+

Narnia Book Club for kids, adults, families, and singles. We are reading C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (set in the fictional land of Narnia where the Lion Aslan is the Christ figure). This week we have been reading chapters 6-8. STEWARDSHIP
The theme of our Annual Pledge Campaign is Transforming Generosity. It has a double meaning – both the way that generosity can transform us and the lives of others, and transforming the way we think about and practice generosity. There will be a Transforming Generosity insert in your bulletin this Sunday. Please make sure to take it home and read it. Stewardship packets were mailed out on October 19. Please thinking and praying about how your generosity can join and support in All Saints’ mission in our community.

Thanks to Tom Day, Bill Smullen, Max Kosempel, and Roger Kosempel for getting the Vesting Room in the Church all cleaned up and put back to use after the ceiling collapse. We are investigating repairs to the flat roofs with our original roofing contractor who installed the roof ten years ago.

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD
This Sunday at 11:30 am St. Bernard’s Church in Bernardsville will hold the ribbon-cutting for its brand-new Parish House. The Rev. Beth Rauen Sciaino, our former seminarian and Curate, invites All Saints’ parishioners to stop by and wish our brothers and sisters at St. Bernard’s well in this next chapter of their life. Historical Note – in 1904 the Bishop of Newark appointed the Rev. Thomas Conover, Rector of St. Bernard’s (in the Diocese of New Jersey), to provide spiritual oversight and counsel to the group of Episcopalians who were forming to start a new church in Millington that became All Saints’. So we are very much a “daughter church” of St. Bernard’s. Congratulations and blessings to our friends!

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
The Seven Practices of the Way of Love:
Turn, Learn, PRAY, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest – The Way of Love is a set of spiritual practices that help us to have a Jesus-centered life...if we practice and embrace them. PRAY is the third practice. It’s the way we dwell intentionally with God daily. When we pray (as individuals or with a group) we invite and dwell in God’s loving presence. Prayer can take many forms and styles; there is no wrong way to pray! But here are some ideas:
  • Use the All Saints’ Daily Prayer Collects that your receive via e-mail each day.
  • Follow one of the forms of Morning, Evening, or Noonday Prayer or Compline in the Prayer Book (there are short versions and longer versions).
  • Sit quietly with a lighted candle and icon (prayer picture) and offer God your thoughts and feelings; or come and sit in church when it is quiet and empty.
  • Make a list of people for whom you want to pray each day. Visualize them whole, happy, and healthy, being blessed by Jesus.
  • Pray while you walk, or run, or wash dishes.
  • Keep a prayer journal in which you write down your gratitudes at the end of each day, and the things for which you are sorry or wish you had done better. Offer them all to God.
  • Memorize a few prayers that really speak to you.
  • Walk a labyrinth – there’s a large outdoor labyrinth at the Convent of St. John Baptist in Mendham.
  • Use Anglican Prayer Beads.
  • Draw and color your prayers in an imaginative way.
  • Remember that prayer can include: adoration/praise of God; confession of ways you have fallen short of God’s best for you; thanksgiving for the ways God has blessed you; intercession on behalf of others; petition/praying for the things you need.
Questions for Reflection
  • What intentional prayer practices center you in God’s presence, so you can hear, speak, or simply dwell with God?
  • How will (or do) you incorporate intentional prayer into your daily life?
  • With whom might you agree to pray daily – either in person, or remotely, or virtually/online?
Here’s a link to a sung prayer, “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Gabriel Faure. It is sung in French and the English translation is displayed on the screen: https://youtu.be/pB_3rG7KZyU

Blessings, Vicki+

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
The Seven Practices of the Way of Love:
Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest – The Way of Love is a set of spiritual practices that help us to have a Jesus-centered life...if we practice and embrace them. Learn is the second practice, in which we reflect daily on Scripture, especially the life and teachings of Jesus.
There are many ways to do this, and you are probably very familiar with some of them:
  • Reading the devotional booklet Forward Day by Day, either the print version or on-line
  • The link for the day’s Bible readings come to you every day in the daily prayer e-mail.
  • Choosing a book of the Bible and read through it on your own – especially one of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) since they are the books that tell Jesus’ story.
  • Read a translation that is very different from what you are used to hearing. On Sunday’s we use the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version), so try The Message or The Common English Bible, in order to hear Scripture in new and fresh ways.
  • Read through the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew, chapters 5-7) a verse or two a day. Maybe even write the verse on a small card or on your phone’s notepad so you can take it with you during the day, and read and pray through it several different times.
Why do all this? What difference does it make? When we say that we believe the Bible is the Word of God, it means that we understand that God inspired human beings to write down the words of story, history, poetry, religious and ceremonial law, ethical instruction – all the different genres that make up the Bible. But that doesn’t mean the words are locked into a “once-and-for-all” definition. The Holy Spirit can and does speak to us as we read and hear Scripture – through little “aha” moments, or nagging questions, or surprising details. Just as the ocean is constant, but every wave is different, so Scripture is constant, but the Holy Spirit’s efforts to reach us through the words will be distinct to each person and season in life.
The more time we take to read the Bible, and the more often we do it (even when we struggle with it), the more we will absorb Jesus’ message to us. That, in turn, shapes our thoughts, our character, and our behavior to be more Christ-like.
Question for Reflection
  • Is there a Bible story or passage that makes you glad when you hear it read in Church?
  • What does it touch within you?
  • How might God be speaking to you, or prodding you through that passage?
  • Who can you tell about your favorite Bible story?
Blessings, Vicki+

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
For All the Saints: St. Francis of Assisi, October 4 – St. Francis is one of the most popular saints. People are drawn to his valuing of creation, his identifying with the poor, his desire to live a simple and honest lifestyle in his Christian faith. Here is a link to a short biography of St. Francis: http://satucket.com/lectionary/Francis_Assisi.htm
Sometimes in our warm feelings about Francis we forget how difficult life could be for him, and how often he suffered hunger and pain, and yet he was filled with joy.

Question for Reflection
What in your faith gives you joy? What do you struggle with? Can you see God in both the joy and the struggle?
And here’s link to a setting of the Prayer of St. Francis by Sarah McLachlan https://youtu.be/IFkjdFgqOY4

Blessings, Vicki+
