STEWARDSHIP
Stewardship Pledge Cards for 2015 are due this Sunday; thank you for your commitment. You may place your card in the offering plate. If you did not receive the pledge materials, they are available in a basket in the Narthex. If you have not yet decided on what your pledge will be, we hope that you will prayerfully consider your support of All Saints’, and return your card in the coming week. You are vital to funding the mission and ministry in this parish. Thank you!

WORSHIP and MUSIC
All Saints’ Sunday, November 2 is our parish feast day. As always, we will begin both services with the chanting of the Necrology, the names of members of the parish and other loved ones who have died in the past year, and those you wish to have remembered. We’ll also renew our baptismal vows in the context of the whole Communion of Saints. At 10 am we’ll also have a Family Service (no Sunday School), hand bell prelude, and we’ll dedicate some new hymnals. See you Sunday!

Celebration! December 7, 4 pm. We will have a festive Advent Evensong to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Mother Vicki’s ordination to the priesthood. There will be a Festival Choir (All Saints’ and friends) at the service. A Parish Pot-Luck Supper will follow.  Sign-up on the sheet in the Narthex to bring an appetizer, side-dish or dessert. Hope you can come to this festive event!

All God’s Children, third Sundays at noon service for special needs kids and their families. It meets the third Sunday of each month (Nov. 16 is next service). We welcome the community to this non-denominational Christian service designed to engage children with a wide variety of developmental, emotional or physical challenges.  Please extend an invitation to those who might be interested; all are welcome!  Contact Mother Vicki with questions.

Altar Guild is the ministry group that sets up the altar for worship and cares for the linens, vessels, etc. Members serve on a team once a month, and for special services. New members are welcome and encouraged. In particular, the Altar Guild is looking for someone to oversee maintaining our stock of candles (ordering, replacing, cleaning the candlesticks and processional torches). If you are interested or want more information please speak to Liz Gorny.

COMMUNITY  ARTS & HOSPITALITY
Advent Theater Production “The Other Wise Man”, Friday, Dec. 5. It’s a Christmas tale in which a fourth Wise Man goes in search of the Christ Child, but at every turn encounters people in great need. Written by Henry Van Dyke, it has been adapted for the stage by William Ward, specifically for All Saints’. This costumed reading by professional actors will take place in the Church. Proceeds will benefit North Porch, which provides emergency supplies to babies and toddlers. We’ll also be collecting jars of baby food for all ages: fruit, veggies and first foods. We’ll also need folks to staff the box office that night, and provide some simple refreshments: cider, cookies, etc. Look at the Advent Mini-Ministries flyer and see if you can help!

FORMATION
Advent and Christmas Mini-Ministries are the way All Saints’ gets ready for our parish worship and celebration of the birth of Our Lord Jesus. There is an info flyer and a sign-up sheet in the Narthex, outlining the different roles, jobs and opportunities for service during the Advent and Christmas seasons. Take a look, and see how you can help. Thanks.

Coffee Hour hosts needed for Sundays after the 10 am service. What do you need to do? Provide sweet and/or savory snacks, juice, hot water for tea, and coffee. Instructions are available and John McGrath can walk you through a demo! Coffee Hour is a wonderful time to meet and greet fellow parishioners and newcomers. Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex.

Thanks!

Food for Kids
– our annual Sunday School in-gathering for the food pantry at St. John’s will take place Sunday, Nov. 23 Children should bring non-perishable foods that appeal to kids. They will offer their donations as part of the opening procession for worship at 10 am. The full list of needed items can be found in the weekly parish e-letter.

Knitting for Seafarers – All Saints’ donated 22 knitted items in our last shipment to Seaman’s Church Institute for their Christmas at Sea program! SCI’s thank-you note is posted in the side hallway. For All the Saints – All Saints’ Day: “Our English word "saint," derived from the Latin sanctus, is used in a variety of ways. Literally it means holy, set apart for God, consecrated, or dedicated. In the New Testament, hagios, the Greek word for saint, is used to refer to all baptized Christians, many of whom were far from exemplary. Paul sometimes scolded the saints for their corrupt and decadent ways.
When we use the word saint in the context of All Saints' Day, we refer especially to those Christians who have lived such hallowed lives, yielding so fully to the Holy Spirit, showing such love for God and his human creatures, that their examples are treasured and emulated. These individuals, a few of whom are remembered in this book, are the champions of Christ and his church and the heroes of the faithful.
In medieval times the Roman Catholic Church developed an elaborate system called canonization for designating and selecting the saints. The Eastern Orthodox and Anglican Churches have been much less systematic in deciding who would be called a saint. Virtually all Christians acknowledge that it is ultimately God who decides who his holy ones are and none of our judgments or acclamations presume to make such decisions for him. Our intention is rather to share and rejoice in the knowledge of those who have done good things in his name in all times and places.
Help us to take seriously our own vocation as saints, as the holy ones of God. Amen.”

Collect for All Saints’ Day ~ Book of Common Prayer
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

For All the Saints – The people being remembered for (Oct. 26) are St. Simon and St. Jude, Apostles.
"the only thing the Gospels tell us about Simon is that he was one of the disciples, and that he was called “the Zealot” (Zelotes). John mentions Jude in his description of the Last Supper. The Epistle of Jude may be the work of the disciple Jude, who is the man mentioned by John as the brother of James the Greater.

Tradition has consistently associated Simon and Jude as apostles to Persia. Some accounts state that they were martyrs, a tradition generally accepted by the Western Church. The Monology of Basil, however, says that Simon died a peaceful death at Edessa. Jude, who was surnamed Thaddeus, has been confused with another Thaddeus, who was also said to have died a quiet death, either in Beirut or Edessa. Whatever the facts, accounts conflict and reliable data are lacking.

There are other scholarly questions about both men. One involves Simon’s appellation “Zelotes.” Whether in fact he had been a member before his conversion of one of the several factions called “Zealots,” or whether this title refers to his zeal for the Jewish law, is not known, but he has consistently been identified by it. For some centuries, and even to this day, Jude has been regarded in popular devotion as the “patron of desperate or lost causes,” but the basis of this tradition is obscure.

The Epistle of Jude concludes with this striking doxology: “Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God our Savior, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all time and now and for ever” (Jude 24–25)." ~ Holy Women, Holy Men.

For All the Saints – The people being remembered today (Oct. 16) are Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, Bishops and Martyrs, 1555.

“Hugh Latimer was the outstanding English preacher of the Reformation.  His sermons against ecclesiastical abuses led to several trials for heresy, but no proof could be established against his orthodoxy. Latimer was little interested in the refinements of doctrine; his zeal was concentrated on the moral life of Christian clergy and people.

Born of yeoman stock about 1490 in Leicestershire, Latimer graduated from Clare College, Cambridge, and became a Fellow in 1510. Though a conservative, he was attracted to the new currents of reform stemming from the Continental Reformation of the 1520’s. King Henry VIII made him a royal chaplain in 1530, and five years later appointed him to the See of Worcester, a position he relinquished in 1539 in opposition to the king’s reactionary policies against the
progress of the Reformation.  In the reign of Edward VI, Latimer became prominent again as a preacher, but he refused to resume his see. With the accession of Queen Mary in 1553 he was imprisoned, and on October 16, 1555, he was burned at the stake in Oxford alongside Bishop Nicholas Ridley.

Nicholas Ridley was born in Northumberland, and was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge. While there he belonged to a circle of young men deeply attracted to the currents of reform inspired by the Continental Reformation. A supporter of Archbishop Cranmer’s reforming agenda, Ridley became the Archbishop’s Chaplain in 1537, and vicar of Herne, Kent, in 1538. He was chosen Master of Pembroke in 1540, and chaplain to Henry VIII and Canon of Canterbury in 1541. Two years later he was acquitted of a charge of heresy. Early in the reign of Edward VI, Ridley was made Bishop of Rochester and participated with Cranmer in the preparation of the first Book of Common Prayer. He was translated to the See of London in 1550, where he was a strong advocate for and administrator of the principles of the Reformation. His unwillingness to recant of his Protestant theology and his opposition to the accession of Queen Mary led to his condemnation and his execution at the side of Bishop Latimer.” ~ Holy Women, Holy Men.

Prayer for Autumn Days ~ Author Unknown

God of the seasons, there is a time for everything; there is a time for dying and a time for rising. We need courage to enter into the transformation process.

God of autumn, the trees are saying goodbye to their green, letting go of what has been. We, too, have our moments of surrender, with all their insecurity and risk. Help us to let go when we need to do so.

God of fallen leaves lying in colored patterns on the ground, our lives have their own patterns. As we see the patterns of our own growth, may we learn from them.

God of misty days and harvest moon nights, there is always the dimension of mystery and wonder in our lives. We always need to recognize your power-filled presence. May we gain strength from this.

God of harvest wagons and fields of ripened grain, many gifts of growth lie within the season of our surrender. We must wait for harvest in faith and hope. Grant us patience when we do not see the blessings.

God of geese going south for another season, your wisdom enables us to know what needs to be left behind and what needs to be carried into the future. We yearn for insight and vision.

God of flowers touched with frost and windows wearing white designs, may your love keep our hearts from growing cold in the empty seasons.

God of life, you believe in us, you enrich us, you entrust us with the freedom to choose life. For all this, we are grateful.

Blessings,
Vicki McGrath+

For All the Saints – Each week when there is a Saint’s day, a Prayer Book holy day, or a commemoration of a faithful witness in the Episcopal Church calendar, I’ll include a brief biography of one of the people being commemorated. The write-up will be taken from Holy Women, Holy Men (the successor to Lesser Feasts and Fasts). I hope you enjoy these. We learn from the life and faith of those Christian s who have gone before us, and see, perhaps, different ways of being faithful to Christ.

The person being remembered today (Oct. 9) is Wilfred Thomason Grenfell, Medical Missionary, d. 1940.

“Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell was born in Cheshire, England in 1865, the second of four sons of the Reverend Algernon Sidney Grenfell, headmaster of Mostyn House School, Parkgate, and his wife Jane Georgina Hutchinson. While studying medicine at the London Hospital Medical School, he came under the influence of American revivalist Dwight L. Moody. An athlete skilled in boxing, cricket, rugby, and rowing, he was an early exponent of the “muscular Christianity” made famous by Charles Kingsley.

In 1887, following his medical qualification, he joined the Royal National Mission to Deep-Sea Fisherman as a medical missionary, serving in Iceland and the Bay of Biscay. During a visit to Labrador in 1892, Grenfell was appalled by the near-starvation, poverty, and ill health of the British workers there. Devoting himself to their nurture and improvement, be built the first hospital of the Labrador Medical Mission in 1893, eventually opening boarding schools, hospital ships, clothing distribution centers, and the Seaman’s Institute at St. John’s, Newfoundland, often with money he raised himself with speaking tours and books. Several of his books about Labrador and his religious books appealed to those with whom he worked due to his modest and simple style.

In 1912, he organized the International Grenfell Association, with branches in Newfoundland, the United States, and Canada, and this organization supported his work and ministry for the remainder of his career. Grenfell retired from his work in 1935 due to ill health. He died in Vermont in October of 1940.” ~ Holy Women, Holy Men

Sailor's Paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift.
He lighteth me across the dark waters.
He steereth me in the deep channels.
He keepeth my log.
He guideth me beneath stars of his holiness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I sail 'mid the thunders and tempest of life,
I shall dread no anger, for thou art with me;
Thy love and thy care, they shelter me.
Thou preparest a harbour for me in the homeland of eternity.
Thou anointest the waves with oil
My ship rideth calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight shall favour me on the voyage I take,
And I will rest in the port of God forever. ~ from the Mission to Seafarers, Canada

WORSHIP and MUSIC
All Saints’ Sunday, November 2 is our parish feast day. As always, we will begin both services with the chanting of the Necrology, the names of members of the parish and other loved ones who have died in the past year, and those you wish to have remembered. Please e-mail or call the Parish Office by October 27 with the names of those to be included in this year’s prayer.

All God’s Children, our monthly service for special needs kids and their families, meets the third Sunday of each month; next service is October 19 at 12 noon. We welcome the community to this non-denominational Christian service designed to engage children with Autism, ADHD, ADD, Down syndrome or any other developmental, emotional or physical challenges.

Save the date! December 7 at 4 pm we’ll have a festive Advent Evensong to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Mother Vicki’s ordination to the priesthood, followed by a Parish Pot-Luck Supper. Put the date on your calendar now.

STEWARDSHIP
Undercroft Update – All of the flooring has been finished and is fully usable!. We are still getting organized and re-settled in the space. It looks wonderful, and we are so grateful to Church Insurance and all of the contractors who made this possible! We’ll dedicate our renewed Undercroft in a few weeks.

HELPING HANDS
Knitting for Seafarers All Saints’ has a dedicated group of volunteers who knit scarves and caps for Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas-at-Sea ministry. If you are interested in knitting for this ministry, please speak to Janet Mansfield. She can give you directions and yarn, and then you work on the project on your own time.
