Dear Friends in Christ,
The Rummage Sale is tomorrow, Sat., 9/17, from 9 am-2 pm! Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to pull this together, especially to Kimberly Celeste for her leadership. We hope to see you there – either setting up, selling, delivering rummage, or cleaning up at the end of the Sale. Besides being our biggest fund-raiser, it is also a wonderful opportunity to meet and welcome our community neighbors, and share something of the All Saints’ spirit of God’s love with them! And then join us on Sunday morning at worship. Of course we’ll announce the results, but we’ll give thanks to God for all the ministries efforts that went into the Sale. And we’ll celebrate at coffee hour! We will also be celebrating a baptism (see Worship below); please be on hand to welcome our newest Christian!

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Bible Study this Wed., September 21 at 10:15 am in the Rath House. We’ll be reading Acts, Chapter 3 – the story of the first Christians and the way they learned to listen to the Holy Spirit as they followed Jesus in their communities and beyond. Come learn and grow!

And coming soon... Pilgrim - a Course for the Christian Journey. Christian formation is the lifelong process of growing in relationship with God, self, others and all creation. In this process, we are transformed into the people God wants us to be, equipped and strengthened to serve Christ in the world. This new resource from the Episcopal Church meets in six-week segments and covers the following broad questions: What do Christians believe? How do Christians know and worship God? How do Christians live? What is the Christian vision for the world?  More information will be available in September. For now it would be helpful to know if Monday or Wednesday evenings would work best for you. Please indicate your availability on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

Episcopal Church Bumper Stickers are available in the Narthex. They say: “We Are the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement” and have the Episcopal shield on them. The saying is a quotation from a short and very inspiring video that our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry made about the Episcopal way of being Christian in God’s world. Take a sticker and display it proudly!

Do you know the date of your baptism and/or your child’s? We are collecting these baptismal anniversary dates for a parish project. Please take a few minutes to look for this information and send it in to the office via e-mail, with the subject line: Baptismal Anniversary. Thanks!

Sunday School – we are always happy to have adults and teens who are interested in helping with this ministry, working with the children of our parish to help support their spiritual development and growth in faith. Think you don’t know enough? This is a great way for adults to learn and grow also! Speak to Jackie Sullivan for more information!

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
Generosity
"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." — Winston Churchill.
We often think of generosity as an adjective, describing a person, their attitudes, their personality. But in fact, generosity is a noun – as in, “an act of generosity.” But it’s a noun that finds all its meaning as a verb, an action. And generosity is a hallmark Christian practice. It’s not what we hope to feel; it’s what we actually do. Generosity is giving to others without the expectation of return or repayment.

As Christians, we know the generosity of God in creating us, sustaining us; in Jesus giving up his life for us – pure gift, sheer grace.

The first Christians understood this, and practiced it as they began to live the Way of Jesus after his resurrection, as we hear in Acts 2:42-47 – “42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Generosity is a practice, something we do on a regular basis; some we do again and again until we get good at it, and until it becomes part of our identity and nature. It hard work; our culture always wants us to act and think about our own self-interest first and foremost. But we give to others because God gives to us; and part of our faith is learning to be like God, learning to be Christ’s agents in the world.
Towards whom does God want you to be generous today?

Blessings,
Vicki+

Christian Spiritual Practices
Care for Creation
We know that part of our stewardship is our care for God’s creation. But that care goes beyond our appreciation for the beauty of the earth, love for animals, or enjoyment of the natural world. When we really stop and ask “How can I be a good steward of this gift God has given me and the human community?” we find that there are many ways to exercise wise stewardship. Not everyone can do everything, of course; and there are practices which you may already be doing, but here are a few suggestions:
  • Conscious recycling – recycling as much of your household and workplace paper, plastic, metal, etc. as possible; look for packaging that is made from recycled material.
  • Reduce the use of pesticides and toxic cleaning products that get into our ground water and rivers, streams, and oceans.
  • Plant flowers and shrubs that are friendly to bees, butterflies, and other insects that help pollinate fruit trees and vegetables.
  • When possible, walk, bike, carpool, or take public transit to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Check to see that faucets (inside and out) are not leaking and wasting water.
  • For more information, check out GreenFaith, the interfaith environmental ministry here in New Jersey at www.greenfaith.org. It was started in 1992 as Partners for Environmental Quality by Christian and Jewish leaders. One of the founders was the Rev. Skip Vilas, who was a supply priest here for two weeks this summer.
Most of all, pray and listen to the ways that God will direct you to care for creation – for your own good, and for the community.
Blessings,
Vicki+

Dear Friends in Christ,
Happy Labor Day weekend to everyone! If you are at the Shore or other places that may be affected by the tropical storm, please be careful as you travel. As school starts next week, prayers for all children and teachers as they begin the new school year. And prayers for all young adults who have graduated from high school or college and are finding their way in the world of work.
Of course, September is also the start of our program year. It’s a great time to give more focus to our relationship with the God who loves us, and wants us to be his agents and representatives in the world God has made. As Christ’s representatives, we all need a tune-up from time to time…just like a car or bicycle. There are many ways to do that – prayer, gvivng of ourselves, Bible reading, worship, meditation, exercise, reflection on how we use of time and money, taking a class, music; and All Saints’ has offerings in a number of these areas which may be helpful for you. No matter what, our growth as disciples/followers of Jesus depends on learning and deepening “holy habits” so that we learn to speak and act out of the life of Christ ingrained in us. What Christian habit/outlook will you invest in this fall?

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
Work
As Americans, we work hard, and we increasingly work long hours. We do that because we need to support ourselves and our loved ones. Some of us are able to say that we love our work, or enjoy it, or take satisfaction in it. Others struggle with jobs that are dangerous, or demeaning, or that just don’t mesh well with our interests and skills, but is the only job available at the time. No matter which category we fall into, our work is part of our life of faith. Who we are and how we act on the job is as much a part of following Jesus as worship and loving our neighbor is. What does that mean? It means that bring our best selves to work every day, that we stay grounded in our knowledge and awareness of God’s love for us, it means that we act with integrity as much as we can – knowing full well that there will be challenges to doing so. It also means standing with co-workers and employees who may be having personal struggles, or be experiencing work-place mistreatment or injustice. It means looking for the best outcome for your work team, and not just for yourself. It also means valuing everyone at your work place and showing them respect – even that person who rubs you the wrong way, or with whom you disagree strenuously.

So as you start back to work next Tuesday, think about how your work contributes to the good of the larger community or society. Ask God to help you do your work to the best of your ability. A prayer each day on the way to work goes a long way towards helping you stay focused. Here are two examples:

For Vocation in Daily Life
Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory
and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the
earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service
of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in
truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of
him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. ~ Book of Common Prayer
OR
A Workplace Prayer
My Heavenly father, as I enter this workplace I bring your presence with me.
I speak your peace, your grace, your mercy, and your perfect order in this office.
I acknowledge your power over all that will be spoken, thought, decided, and done within these walls.

Lord, I thank you for the gifts you have blessed me with.
I commit to using them responsibly in your honor.
Give me a fresh supply of strength to do my job.
Anoint my projects, ideas, and energy so that even my smallest accomplishment may bring you glory.

Lord, when I am confused guide me.
When I am burned out infuse me with the light of the Holy Spirit.
May the work that I do and the way I do it bring faith, joy, and a smile to all that I come in contact with today.
