Dear Friends in Christ,
We had a wonderful week of Vacation Bible Camp! Please see the report below. This Wednesday our Parish Office will be closed for Independence Day. Have a safe, happy, and reflective Fourth of July.
+ + + + + + +
 Here are this week’s announcements:
  • Summer Buildings Chores (Buildings & Grounds)
  • Summer Choir (Worship)
  • Bus to Bishop’s Service (Diocesan News)
  • Vacation Bible Camp Report (Christian Formation)

FUN & FUNDRAISING

Thanks to Ava’s Ice Cream in Basking Ridge for Friday night’s fund raiser. The home-made ice cream was delicious, the setting was relaxing, and the company delightful! 10% of eache purchase by parishioners was donated to All Saints’.

Rummage Sale! We’ll begin accepting rummage August 5, “The First Sunday of Rummage.” The Sale is September 29. What do we take? Good, usable, clean rummage: furniture, housewares, tools, toys, holiday items, yard & garden, art work, kids’ books, small electronics, boutique, office supplies, sporting goods, etc. What don’t we take?  Cribs, large appliances, large sofas, entertainment centers, tube TVs. Tell your friends and neighbors! This sale is our most visible community event, and our largest fund-raiser. Check the poster in the narthex to see how you can help. Questions? Speak to Kimberly Celeste.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Wizards & Wonders (Harry Potter) Vacation Bible Camp was a wonderful success! Children and adults learned about their true identity, cooperation, being loved by God, handling temptations, and seeing the Kingdom of God in the midst of ever day life. We also did some cool science experiments, played outdoor and imaginative games, walked the labyrinth, read Bible stories, sang songs, learned from one another, and had fun. Thank you to everyone who came and helped out! The intergenerational evening model worked really well; we all learned from one another. This is certainly something we’ll try again.

Bible Study Wednesdays at 10:15 am in the Rath House will not meet July 4th. Next week, July 11, we’ll read and discuss Galatians chapter 4. Bible study is for everyone, whether you own a Bible or have ever read it, or not! Hope to see you there!

WORSHIP
Come join the fun and sing in the All Saints' Summer Choir! Two different opportunities: July 22 & August 19! No experience is needed. You are welcome whether you sing in choir during the rest of the year or not. Meet in the choir room at 9:15 am to learn the anthem and then help lead worship at 10:00. Please talk to Alison Siener Brown for more information.

PARISH LIFE
Summer Fishing Trip – would you be interested in a day of fishing at the Shore? Steve Kowalik is willing to organize an outing on a boat this summer. Please put your name on the sheet in the Narthex if you would like more information, and Steve will be in touch with you.

Summer Refreshments are available after the 10 am service on the Parish House lawn. Please join us for a cool drink and conversation. If you can host a Sunday (iced tea, lemonade, cookies), please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex or speak to John McGrath.

DIOCESAN NEWS
If you are interested in seeing the consecration of Carlye Hughes as the 11th Bishop of Newark and hearing the Presiding Bishop Curry speak, let Suzanne Kosempel know!  We are thinking about obtaining a bus to take a group from All Saints to the NJPAC on Saturday, 9/22/18 and it would be very helpful to get an idea of how many people are interested.  Please either email Suzanne at skosempel@verizon.net with the name and number of people interested or sign up on the sheet in the Narthex of the Church.

BUILDINGS & GROUNDS
Snow Plowing Overage - Thank you for the generosity of everyone who has made donations to our snow plowing fund. We don’t have a final count yet, but we are very close to our goal. If you can assist us with making up the snow plowing overage, please make a check out to “All Saints’ Church” and put “Snow 2018” in the memo line. Or you may use the PayPal portal on our website. Thank you!

Summer Building Chores - The Parish Hall Floor and the floor outside the bathrooms is finished! The original hard wood under the tile in the hallway was good enough to be repaired and refinished. Some touch-up painting has also been done, which means that our Parish Hall is now in very good shape! Thanks to Tom Day’s hard work, new shelving has gone up in the Parish House furnace room, and it has been cleaned out and re-organized. The bell tower of the Church has been cleaned and power washed, among other chores.
There are other property and buildings projects being worked on this summer. Stay tuned for more information. Thank you to the Vestry for moving these projects along!

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Wednesday Walkabouts - How well do you know the neighborhoods that All Saints’ serves? No matter how often you drive through a place, you never see it the same way as when you walk it. This summer we’ll have evening Walkabouts in parish neighborhoods at 6:30 pm. Each walk will last about 45 minutes, with a meal at a local restaurant afterwards to share fellowship and talk about what we have seen and learned. Details are on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.
July 11 – Gillette (meet and then have dinner at Chimney Rock)
July 18 – Warrenville Center (meet at 41 Mountain Boulevard and then dinner at Ye’s Asian Bistro)

Summer Community Program – this year we will once again host LHT’s Little Explorers PreK camp for five weeks. We are pleased to be able to house this good activity for the children of our community!

Act of Loving-Kindness Idea: Cyclists’ Water Station? At Charlie White’s funeral people were asked to do some act of loving-kindness for another person in their day-to-day life. Here’s an idea that we as a parish might be able to do - provide water for bikers who pass the church on the weekends. We could fill a cooler on summer Saturday and Sunday mornings with gallon jugs of water and have a sign to let cyclists know the water is available. It would take about 15 minutes, and volunteers would sign up to cover a day. If this is something you’d be interested in, please let Mother Vicki know. Thanks!

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
For Our Country
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ Book of Common Prayer, page 820: first printed in the 1928 BCP

Here are two hymns from our nation’s history:
“Chester”, a hymn of the American Revolution https://youtu.be/LSPEizGsaOw
And “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with all the original verses, performed by the folk singer Odetta https://youtu.be/4VsE9T4Sr30 .

Dear Friends in Christ,
This is a week of happy celebrations for many families, with school getting out for summer, and high school graduations. Congratulations to our parish high schoolers who graduated this week – Alexandra Constantinou, Max Kosempel, Kenzie McNulty, Alaina Phillips, and Sarah Sullivan. We are giving thanks for their accomplishments, and praying for the next steps in life to be blessed!
+ + + + + + +
This is also a week of turmoil and pain for some children and their families on our border. Whatever you may think about the wisdom and judgment of these parents bringing their children with them as they were (in many cases) fleeing violence and death threats in their home countries - primarily Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador - the separation of babies, toddlers, and children from their parents has caused trauma and emotional harm. The process of reuniting these families is unclear. While we may take different political perspectives on how to solve this crisis, from the perspective of Christian faith to cause harm to children and to break families apart is immoral. Please pray for the safety and well-being of these children – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual – and pray that our country will be able to find a just, equitable, and compassionate legal solution. ~ VGM+

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Prayers for Children and Young People
For the Care of Children
Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

For Young Persons
God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
                                                         ~ Book of Common Prayer, p. 829

Dear Friends in Christ,

Thank you to everyone who helped with the service and reception Thursday night for Charlie White’s funeral. It was wonderful to have so many people turn out to honor Charlie’s life and to give thanks to God for his presence among us, and the way he touched all our lives. Particular thanks to Susie Harris, Helen Mederos, and Barbara Barbeau for taking the lead on the reception; to Alison Siener Brown and the choir for their beautiful anthem; and to Matt and Greta DiGiorgio from Ava’s Ice Cream. The photo is of the bicycle decoration at the reception (not Charlie’s actual bike). It was a blessing for the parish and the whole community to be together.

Father’s Day will be recognized this Sunday at both services. We’ll have prayers and carnations to remember and honor our fathers. Please join us for worship.

Bus to Newark for the consecration of our new Bishop Carlye J. Hughes. The service will be September 22 at 11 am at NJPAC. If you are interested in traveling to the service by bus, please speak to Suzanne Kosempel.

BUILDINGS & GROUNDS
Snow Plowing Overage Update - This past winter we had the unexpected expense of snow removal for 20 inches of snow about our contracted amount. Some of the A.A. groups that meet here have helped us with this bill, and we have received about $1000 from parishioners so far. The reminder we need is $3,600. We are asking every active parish household to contribute $60, which will enable us to cover this expense. Some can do more, some can do less; but everyone’s contribution is important and welcomed. If you can assist us with making up the snow plowing overage, please make a check out to “All Saints’ Church” and put “Snow 2018” in the memo line. Or you may use the PayPal portal on our website. Thank you! (*Note – the summer buildings & grounds projects are paid for out of Legacy/Capital funds set aside for these purposes, and not out of the annual operating budget).

The Parish Hall Floor was refinished this week. It needs an additional week to cure before it can be walked on. The tile floor in the hall outside the bathrooms was pulled up and the original hard wood was good enough to be repaired and refinished (there had been termite damage some years ago). Both floors have three coats of polyurethane which will provide a strong. Lasting protective finish. Thanks to your Vestry for moving this project along!

Parish House Furnace Upgrade this Week – as part of the energy savings efforts that the Vestry has undertaken, the Parish House furnace (gas-fired hot air) will be replaced with a smaller, high efficiency unit. 70% of the cost of this retro-fitting is covered by a program from the state of New Jersey! As soon as the heating season begins in the fall we will start to see savings, and it is estimated that our investment will be recouped in 15 months.

PARISH CALENDAR

6/20 Bible Study                    Rath House, 10:15 am

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Loving-Kindness – At Charlie White’s service those who attended were asked in Charlie’s memory to do an act of loving-kindness for another person in their day-to-day life; that speaks to the essence of Charlie’s life and faith. What simple act of loving-kindness and courteous generosity might you be able to make this coming week? When have you been on the receiving end of kindness and courtesy? As Christians, our lives should contain both giving and receiving; we should know how to extend ourselves to others, and how to express gratitude – to God and to others through whom God’s blessings come.
The final hymn at Charlie’s service was “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Here’s a Louis Armstrong version of it: https://youtu.be/17nXsv7o64k

Blessings, Vicki+

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Gratitude to our Creator - one of the basic understandings of God in the Bible (both Old and New Testaments) is that God is the Creator of all that is, “visible and invisible.” Christian faith understands that God is not just some clock-maker in the sky who sets up the physical structure, sets it running, and then walks away. That was the Deist mind-set that took hold during the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Christian and Jewish belief is that God is the loving Creator who continues to be intimately involved with creation.
Our gratitude, thanks, and praise to our Creator is an important daily practice; not only for the gift of life we have been given, but for the beauty and goodness that sustains us.
A hymn in our hymnal (#9 in the “Morning” section) expresses this well:
1
Not here for high and holy things we render thanks to thee,
but for the common things of earth, the purple pageantry
of dawning and of dying days, the splendor of the sea,
2
the royal robes of autumn moors, the golden gates of spring,
the velvet of soft summer nights, the silver glistering
of all the million million stars, the silent song they sing,
3
of faith and hope and love undimmed, undying still through death,
the resurrection of the world, what time there comes the breath
of dawn that rustles through the trees, and that clear voice that saith:
4
Awake, awake to love and work! The lark is in the sky,
the fields are wet with diamond dew, the worlds awake to cry
their blessings on the Lord of life, as he goes meekly by.
5
Come, let thy voice be one with theirs, shout with their shout of praise;
see how the giant sun soars up, great lord of years and days!
So let the love of Jesus come and set thy soul ablaze,
6
to give and give, and give again, what God hath given thee;
to spend thyself nor count the cost; to serve right gloriously
the God who gave all worlds that are, and all that are to be.
~ written by Geoffrey Anketel Studdert-Kennedy (1883-1929), Church of England priest and World War I Army chaplain.

Wednesday Walkabouts: Coming Again in June and July! How well do you know the neighborhoods that All Saints’ serves? No matter how often you drive through a place, you never see it the same way as when you walk it. This summer we’ll have evening Walkabouts in three parish neighborhoods. Each walk will last about 45 minutes, with a meal at a local restaurant afterwards to share fellowship and talk about what we have seen and learned. Details are on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex. WORSHIP
Choir Sunday – June 10. The last Sunday for our choirs before the summer break.

Altar Guild – are you looking for a behind-the-scenes way to serve God and All Saints’? The Altar Guild welcomes anyone interested in this ministry. What do they do? Set up the altar for Sunday services, care for the linens and silver, as well as caring for the interior of the worship space. Members work in teams once a month, with all hands on deck for Christmas and Easter. This is a practical and prayerful ministry and your help would be greatly appreciated. For more information speak to Liz Gorny or Mother Vicki.

PARISH LIFE
Summer Refreshments are available after the 10 am service on the Parish House lawn, starting June 17. Please join us for a cool drink and conversation. If you can host a Sunday (iced tea, lemonade, cookies), please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex or speak to John McGrath.

This year’s Diocesan Senior Ministries Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from All Saints’ is Hugh Wallace. The awards will be made at a festive Evensong at St. Peter’s, Morristown at 4 pm on Sunday, June 10., preceded by a reception at 3 pm. Hugh has been a parishioner here for forty years and has served as an usher, a greeter for Family Promise Homeless Shelter, a member of the Going Local Guiding Team, a driver for the food pantry, a coordinator for quite a number of buildings and grounds projects, and an integral part of the Veterans’ Dinners team. Please come and show your support and appreciation for Hugh on June 10. Congratulations, Hugh!

BUILDINGS & GROUNDS
Summer Buildings & Grounds projects the Vestry is working on:
  • Parish House Energy Savings All the light fixtures have been fitted with LED ballasts and dimmable bulbs. We will be adding dimmer switches to the ceiling lights upstairs and down. The gas-fired forced hot-air furnace will be replaced. This is both an environmental and financial benefit. This is a state-funded program. Our portion of the project will be paid for in savings on our energy bill in fifteen months, and we’ll have continued savings going forward.
  • Parish Hall Floor will be refinished starting June 10 - The color will match the stairs in the main entryway, with three coats of polyurethane. The hall floor outside the bathrooms will also be replaced. This project will increase our attractiveness to groups and individuals seeking rentals, as well as general upkeep of the building.
  • Parish House and Church Emergency Egress Lighting – this a state code for all new and existing buildings. The town has known of this since 1999, but only informed us this spring that we needed to do this work.
All of these projects are being paid for out of our Legacy/Capital funds, not from the operating budget. The Legacy funds are monies and bequests that have been given over the years for projects above and beyond the annual operating costs of the church, usually for capital items. They are held in a separate account at Millington Bank.

All Saints' Community Garden is ready and available for planting! Herbs, veggies, flowers - whatever suits your fancy. The garden is located on the back island of the parking lot and has raised beds with a number of plots available. Produce from the garden can be donated to our food ministry for distribution to those in need. Interested? Speak to Jane Hayden.

FUN & FUNDRAISING
Rummage Sale! The Sale is coming September 29! We’ll begin accepting rummage August 5, “The First Sunday of Rummage.” And we’ll need lots of help sort, pricing, organizing. Check the poster in the Narthex to see how you can help. Questions? Speak to Kimberly Celeste

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Be A Blessing – How often do you find yourself in a casual conversation with someone at Shop-Rite, the bank, on the train, at the library, or any other place and they let on that they are having a difficult time? Or perhaps you are a bystander to an encounter in a public place that isn’t gong so well (screaming toddler, rude and demanding customer, etc.; what do you do?

Here are two suggestions:
1) If you are the bystander, rather than let yourself get annoyed by the disruption, try praying silently for peace and calm for the other. Ask God to help them deal with whatever it is that has set them off. You might even imagine in your mind’s eye “The Peace of God which passes all understanding” wrapping them like a blanket and holding them securely.

2) If you are having an actual conversation and the other person shares some difficulty he or she is going through, you could say something like: “I find a lot of strength and comfort in prayer. Is it OK if I include you in my prayers tonight?’ and then ask them how you might pray for them – later on, not there in the store…unless, of course, they ask you to do that! It may be that a son or daughter or spouse needs help, or a job, or the person is asking for strength or guidance. All you have to do is to say you would be honored to pray for them, and then remember to do so!
