This Week @ All Saints'

Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday, June 29 is Social Media Sunday. What is it? Started by two Episcopal Church communications volunteers, the idea is simply this: if even a minority of the Episcopalians who use social media all post about their churches on Sunday, millions of our friends and family will learn something about The Episcopal Church. It's evangelism going viral.

It’s simple – be a 'social media ambassador" for All Saints’ by posting a photo from church on Facebook, putting a church-related tweet or photo with the hashtag #Episcopal on Twitter or Instagram, or checking into church on Foursquare. Feel free to take a photo before, during (minus the flash!), or after worship and then share it on your social media sites. Be sure to include “All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Millington, NJ” somewhere in the post. Don’t do social media? No worries; take a photo and send it to a friend or family member. And if you can’t be at church on Sunday, you can still participate by posting, tweeting, etc. without a new photo.

You can find some more ideas and resources for Social Media Sunday here: episcopalshare.org. You can also join (and invite your Episco-peeps to) the Facebook event #Episcopal Social Media Sunday.

Dear Friends in Christ,

The announcements for the week are below. If you are on Facebook and haven’t yet “liked” the All Saints’ Facebook page, please do so. It’s listed as “All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Millington, NJ”. Also, Sunday, June 29 is “Social Media Sunday” for the Episcopal Church. We’ll get some information out about it during the week, but you can read about it on the diocesan website here: http://www.dioceseofnewark.org/event/social-media-sunday .

Finally, Alison Siener Brown is away for the next two Sundays as part of her vacation – a rest well-deserved! While she is away we will have two different guest organists. This Sunday our musician is James D. Hicks. For over twenty-five years Jim was the Director of Music at the Presbyterian Church of Morristown. He now spends time recording giving concerts. Jim studied at the Peabody Institute of Music, Yale, and the University of Cincinnati. Come enjoy his music on Sunday and make him feel welcome!

If you’ve never been to the Convent, this is a great chance to see what it is all about. Rummage Sale – September 20! Our annual parish fundraiser needs all hands on deck…and we need your rummage! Rummage Drop-off will begin Sunday, August 3 in the Parish Hall. What do we collect? Furniture, house wares, sports equipment, bikes, toys, linens, kids’ books (none for grown-ups, thanks), tolls, gardening items, lamps, small appliances, boutique items, holiday decorations – almost anything as long as it is clean and in working condition. Note – we do not take clothes, shoes, large TVs or tires. Sign-up sheets for volunteers are in the Narthex. If you help with sorting and pricing you can now do it in air-conditioning the Parish Hall! If you have questions please speak with Kimberly Celeste.

Snow and Heating – Recently we sent out a letter to the parish outlining the cost of snow removal and heating for the Church buildings that went over budget for the past winter – due to the extreme cold and snowfall; it was $7000. We are asking each household (if possible) to make a donation of $80 to offset this expense. We know that not everyone will be able to do this, and that some can do a bit more. However you can help is very much appreciated. Checks can be sent to the Parish Office or put in the offering plate, marked “Snow.” Thank you to everyone who has already contributed. We are getting close to our goal, but we are not there quite yet. If you have any questions about this, please speak to the Wardens – Tom Day and Jackie Sullivan, or to Mother Vicki.

June 12, 2014

Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday, the day we celebrate “God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity”, as the hymn says. At 8 am we return to using the Rite I version of the service (more traditional language). And at the 10 am service the Handbell Choir will play two pieces – an Introit at the beginning and the Offertory. Come and hear them! At both services we’ll also remember and pray for all our fathers (in heaven or on earth) with Father’s Day carnations.

Following the 10 am service the Coffee Hour will be hosted by David Thursfield and his family to celebrate David’s 70th birthday…and we are all invited! Please be on hand to offer David your birthday greetings.

Buildings and Grounds Update – There are several items to mentions: 1) over the winter we had ice and water damage to the roof over the Church’s side entrance (facing Basking Ridge Road). Our insurance company has put a new rubber membrane on the roof, and they will soon be scheduling plaster and paint repairs to the interior walls. We are also waiting to hear about what they might do with the carpeting in that entrance. 2) The very tall Ponderosa Pine tree on the lawn next to the Church has finally succumbed to the fungus that had been affecting it over the past few years. The work to take it down has already begun. The wood will be taken away by a company who shreds it to make bedding for horses. 3) The trees in the parking lot had their roots damaged in last summer’s re-paving. They are being monitored closely. Throughout the summer we’ll be watering them as needed. Our tree service has told us not to put any more chips or mulch on the islands, nor to put weed-killer or vinegar on the wood chips. Weeds will be controlled by weed-whacking.

HELPING HANDS

Summer Food Pantry Needs – as summer comes on and school lets out children won’t have access to school breakfast and lunch programs, stressing family food budgets even further. Please remember, as you do your own grocery shopping, to pick up things that will appeal to kids and their nutritional needs: cereal, parmalaat milk, juice boxes, whole grain crackers, peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna and chicken, canned vegetables and fruit, raisins, etc. Thank you! Your contributions help so much!

For Trinity Sunday
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three.
Of whom all nature hath creation,
eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
praise to the Lord of my salvation,
salvation is of Christ the Lord.
