THY KINGDOM COME
From Ascension to Pentecost (5/30-6/9), the Archbishop of Canterbury has called us to join with Anglicans/Episcopalians and other Christians throughout the world to pray for God’s kingdom to come “on earth as it is in heaven.” One way to do this is to pray daily for five people in your life to know the love of God in Jesus Christ, as well as praying for a blessing for our communities, that they will reflect God’s wholeness, peace, and justice. Mother Vicki will host a Facebook Live Prayer Event at 5:45 pm each day. Information about how to join the Event, as well as print prayer resources, are available in the Narthex and here.

STEWARDSHIP
Chairs & Vases – We are looking for church folding chairs, both blue and brown. Maybe you borrowed some for an event at your house. We also are looking for the vases that altar flowers were delivered in – if you have received flowers from All Saints’. If you have either of these things at home, please return them to the side entrance of the Church – no questions asked. Thanks!

Care of Creation - God has made a good and beautiful Creation, and we are called to be faithful stewards of it. In this Easter season we celebrate the redemption of all that God has made, and it is important to consider how we are caring for Creation. If you are interested in exploring ways that we at All Saints’ can be better stewards of Creation close to home, please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex and we’ll find a time to gather and discuss ideas. You can also look here for Episcopal Church resources: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/creation-care

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Rogation and Ascension
Rogation Days are traditionally the first part of the week before the Feast of the Ascension. They are a time when the Church focuses its prayer on asking (the Latin word for to ask is rogare) God to bless gardens, farms, herds, crops, and the work needed to plant, tend, and harvest. It started in the late 5th century in France. Because processions around a whole village or parish became part of the Rogation practice, it grew to include themes of resolution of property disputes and reconciliation between neighbors. With the emphasis on blessing and giving thanks Rogation was a precursor to Earth Day and our more recent emphasis on Creation Care and environmental stewardship.

Ascension Day is always the fortieth day of Easter, always a Thursday. It is the day we remember the Risen Christ taking the disciples out to the Mount of Olives, giving them the Great Commission (“Go into the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20) and telling them to wait in Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Spirit whom he would send (Luke 24:44-53). After this, Christ returned to heaven. Ascension is one of the seven principal feasts of the Church year, and an article of faith in both the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. It is not only the completion of Jesus’ story, but it also reminds us that our ministry in Christ’s name always happens through the power of the Holy Spirit – and that very often we need to wait on God’s timing, not our own.

Let us learn to be good stewards of all that God has given us to care for – especially the beautiful Earth; and let us learn the wisdom and blessing of holy waiting.

Blessings, Vicki+

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Formation – Christians are made, not born – except ‘born again by water and the Holy Spirit’. That means we need to be intentional in how we go about becoming Jesus’ followers. We used to talk about ‘Christian Education’, meaning Sunday School and any adult classes or discussion groups. Those are important, but they don’t do the whole job.

Becoming a whole, grown-up Christian is not only about information we have received, about what we know. There are many things that shape us, and in many ways – hence the word ‘formation.’ The way we pray, the frequency with which we gather for worship, the music we sing and hear, the conversations we have, the silence we keep, the way we pay attention to God’s creation, the way we serve others and see Christ in them, the diligence with which we read Scripture and learn the basics of theology, the ways we receive love and compassion from others, the ways we play together, the ways we seek to do God’s justice – all of these form us and shape us to be the people God created us to be, in God’s own image.

It is good to know what helps us to feel most in touch with God – what we are drawn to naturally. But it is equally good to challenge ourselves sometimes – because that is often where spiritual growth will come.

To what are you naturally drawn in Christian life? In what way might the Holy Spirit be challenging you?

Blessings, Vicki+

Please take a look at the week’s announcements.

WORSHIP
Easter is Fifty Days Long! Keep celebrating this Risen Christ! While our baptismal font remains in the aisle for the season, to remind of of resurrection, baptism and New Life, try to find a way to celebrate Easter each day. Here’s one suggestion: take a walk and count how many different plants and trees are in blossom. Give thanks to God for the way your life is blossoming.

Family Service at 10 am this Sunday. Kids should gather in the Narthex at 9:55 am for the procession.

Celebration of the Life of Hugh Wallace
– Saturday, May 11 at 1 pm, with a reception on the Parish Hall. Parishioners are asked to contribute finger desserts. Please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex. In lieu of flowers, the Wallace family asks for donations for ground-cover and tree planting for the parking lot islands. Parking for the service is likely to be overflowing – if you are able, please plan on parking on Knollandale Road or Northfield Road (both down Long Hill Road towards the station) and walk up along the side-walk.

Mother’s Day – May 12. At both 8 & 10 am we’ll have prayers and pink carnations to honor or remember all our mothers. The Rev. Shawn Carty will be the preacher of the day.

Looking ahead in Easter Season – please keep the following dates in mind.
  • May 26, Rogation Sunday – Blessing of the Gardens
  • May 30, Ascension Day – Evensong
  • June 9, Pentecost

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Congratulations to our Confirmands! Jessica Gillespie and Kara Phillips will be Confirmed by Bishop Carlye Hughes Saturday in a diocesan service at Grace Church in Madison. Abigail Saitta will be Confirmed at the Cathedral in Newark on May 18th. All our Confirmands will be celebrated at the 10 am service on June 2. Please offer your prayers of thanksgiving and blessing for these young people who have made an important step in their life of faith.

Bible Study this week, Wed. at 10:15 am in the Rath House. We’ll discuss Chapters 1 & 2 of Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense by N.T. Wright. Copies of the chapter are available on the table on the Narthex – whether you can come to the group or not. Everyone is encouraged to give the handout (and book) a try. Questions? Speak to Mother Vicki.

Vacation Bible School: Save the Dates – Sun., June 23 – Thur., June 27, 6:00-8:30 pm for “Aslan is on the Move” a Narnia-themed program. This will be an inter-generational experience for kids, adults, and families, starting with a simple dinner. This is something to invite friends and neighbors to. Look for more information soon!

Next Sunday’s Gospel Box – an opportunity for adults, kids, and families to read the coming Sunday’s Gospel passage and discuss and wonder about it together. The full set of readings for each Sunday are here: www.thelectionarypage.com.
May 5, Easter 3 – John 21:1-19
After the Resurrection Jesus appears to the disciples on the beach, and they share a breakfast of bread and fish. How does Jesus show up in meals you share with others? How does his presence give you strength to minister to others?
May 12, Easter 4 – John 10:22-30
Jesus compares himself to a shepherd, and his followers as sheep that hear his voice and follow. In what ways do you hear Jesus’ voice?

FUN & FUNDRAISING
Thanks to Jackie Sullivan and her crew for making our Spring Fish & Chips a wonderful community event. We served 155 dinners and welcomed lots of parishioners, friends, neighbors, and new guests. Good job, everyone!

ShopRite Cards – everyone needs groceries! You may purchase ShopRite cards as a gift or for yourself on Sundays during Coffee House or at the parish office. You pay face value and 5% goes to All Saints’ ministries. Purchase with check or cash. Please speak to Barbara Barbeau.

THY KINGDOM COME
In the days between the Feast of the Ascension and Pentecost (May 30-June 9), the Archbishop of Canterbury has called us to join with Anglicans (Episcopalians) and other Christians throughout the world to pray for God’s kingdom to come “on earth as it is in heaven” as Jesus taught us. That means praying daily for people in your life (individuals or families) to know the love of God in Jesus, as well as praying for a blessing of the common good of our communities, that they will reflect God’s wholeness, peace, and justice. In particular, you are invited to think of five people you know to choose to pray for during this time.
There will be some resources, and particular opportunities to engage in prayer with others in this effort. Those resources will be available soon. In the meantime, here’s a link to the website: https://www.thykingdomcome.global/about-us

CHRISTIAN PRACTICES
Creation Care – One aspect of our faith is our stewardship of God’s good Creation. Especially in this Easter season when we celebrate the redemption of all that God has made, it is important to consider how we are caring for Creation.
The Episcopal Church is putting a particular focus on  Creation Care. Follow this link to see some of the things the Church is invoved in and offering: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/creation-care.
How might the Holy Spirit be calling or moving you (or us as a parish) to be more faithful in care for God’s Creation?

Blessings, Vicki+
