Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday is the final week before Lent starts. At our 10 am service we’ll retire our Alleluia banner for the season, we’ll welcome Scouts from our wider community, and we’ll baptize a new member of the parish -Mason Christopher Birckhead.  As we look ahead to Lent, in addition to making some liturgical changes (dropping the “Alleluias”, praying with the Rite I language at 10 am , and changing the service music) we’ll be offering several opportunities for spiritual growth and prayer during the season.  Please take a look below.

 HELPING HANDS
Wonderful Offerings ~ North Porch Women and Infants’ Centers
Destitute families have a growing need for necessary supplies, especially diapers, for babies and toddlers. In 2013, North Porch served 2600 babies and toddlers; this number is expected to increase to 3000 in 2014. Disposable diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps and for sanitary reasons, cloth diapers are often not permitted at coin-operated laundromats. Without transportation, destitute families cannot take advantage of cheaper prices at large discount stores. To stretch the ‘life’ of disposable diapers, families may have a baby spend a day or more in a single diaper or may dry and re-use the diapers, practices which lead to rashes and infections. Thank you all for your support for this worthy ministry and your generous gifts to the baby shower this past Sunday. Your donations were very gratefully received at the collection center at St John’s Dover. ~ Carol Berry

For Kids ~ Lenten Mite Boxes are available to be picked up in the Narthex this Sunday, and will also be available in Sunday School classes March 9.  The children are asked to decorate their boxes and collect change (from their pocket money or chores) to deposit in them every day.  On Easter Sunday the boxes will be collected and the money raised will be donated to North Porch, our Diocesan ministry in our for babies and toddlers in need.

Thank you to our volunteers who served at the Family Promise Homeless Shelter at the Shrine this past week – Randy Gaulke, David Dawson, Hugh Wallace and Joann Behr. Our next time to serve at this ministry will be in the fall. For more information please speak to Kathy Pfeil.

FORMATION
Lent is Not Rocket Science: An Exploration of God, Creation and the Cosmos. Following on our Hubble space telescope pictures in Advent, our Lenten daily meditation booklet was written by Nick Knisely, Bishop of Rhode Island and a former professor of astronomy and physics. Published by Forward Movement (Day by Day, The Bible Challenge) the booklet is available on the table in the Narthex.  It will fit on your briefcase, pocket, purse or bedside as you pray your way through Lent, aware of God’s presence all around us.

Wednesday Lenten Study Group ~ What Do We Say We Believe? 7:30 pm in the Rath House ~ March 12, 26, April 2, 9 - An exploration of the Church’s creeds, the communities that formed them, what they mean to us, and how we put our own faith into words. Please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex.  (This program will also be repeated on Wednesday mornings at 10:15 am). Questions? Speak to Mother Vicki.

Women's Book Group will meet March 19 at 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm in the Rath House. The book for discussion is The Aviator’s Wife, by Melanie Benjamin. It’s a portrayal of the marriage between Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh.  Come for a fun evening of friendship and discussion.

Transfiguration
For that one moment, ‘in and out of time’,
On that one mountain where all moments meet,
The daily veil that covers the sublime
In darkling glass fell dazzled at his feet.
There were no angels full of eyes and wings
Just living glory full of truth and grace.
The Love that dances at the heart of things
Shone out upon us from a human face
And to that light the light in us leaped up,
We felt it quicken somewhere deep within,
A sudden blaze of long-extinguished hope
Trembled and tingled through the tender skin.
Nor can this this blackened sky, this darkened scar
Eclipse that glimpse of how things really are.

Dear Friends in Christ,

We are being inundated by snow.  Of course, all parish events are cancelled for today and tonight.  There seems to be a possibility of more snow on Saturday! If we need to cancel any of the Sunday services there will be a message on the church voice mail, on the website home page and an e-mail letting you know of any cancellations or changes.

Now for some good news!  We are very pleased to announce that Alison Siener Brown has accepted our offer to become our new Director of Music. Alison holds a Bachelor’s in Sacred Music from Westminster Choir College and a Master’s in Organ Performance and Sacred Music from Northwestern University.  She grew up as a chorister at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Buffalo and has long experience with the Royal School of Church Music program. She has served in a number of different churches in New Jersey and Illinois.  Currently she has been serving at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Livingston. She teaches piano privately and maintains a Musikgarten studio for early childhood music and movement.

Alison lives in Bernardsville with her husband Tom who is the Associate Pastor at Chatham Township Presbyterian Church, and their children.

Alison will begin her work with Thursday choir rehearsals (both choirs) on February 27. Her first service with us will be on Sunday, March 9. We look forward to her ministry and music, and the new gifts and insights she will bring. Please be sure to welcome Alison to All Saints’!

The Bible Challenge-We Have Finished-Congratulations, Everyone! In the past year many All Saints’ folk have been engaged in spending time reading the Bible – some have even read the whole Bible.  Whether you have been able to do that or to attend more deeply to the reading of Scripture in public worship, this is a big accomplishment.  When we understand God’s story better, then we are more able to find ourselves in that story and listen more closely to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us.  A short survey about your experience will be sent out in the next day or two.  Please take a few minutes to respond – no matter how much or how little you felt you were able to participate.  Thanks!

Bible Study meets Wednesday at 10:15 am in the Rath House.  This coming week we’ll take a look at the Transfiguration as described in Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28–36.  We’ll also be discussing what comes next.  Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome.  Hope to see you there!

STEWARDSHIP
The Annual Parish Meeting was held last Sunday.  Thanks to everyone for a good (and fun!) meeting.  Copies of the Annual Report are available in the Narthex.  A copy of the Rector’s Report is attached to this e-letter. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, the day for hearts, flowers, chocolates and telling someone dear to you how much you love them.  So where did this celebration come from?  Here is a source from the Church of England that explains it well:

“The Church’s commemoration of Valentine has nothing to do with lovers! It originated with two separate people, both called Valentine. Valentine of Terni was a 3rd century bishop who was martyred at Rome in 273. Valentine of Rome was a priest who was also martyred for his faith in the mid 3rd century. It is likely that these two stories became confused over time, with the two martyrdoms becoming in effect one commemoration. The present-day custom of sending cards and flowers declaring love may owe its existence to John Donne who wrote a marriage song for Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to Frederick V, Elector Palatine on St Valentine’s Day in 1632. Donne’s marriage song merged the religious commemoration of Valentine with fertility symbolism. (Adapted from John Darch and Stuart Burns Saints on Earth, Church House Publishing, 2004).”

A prayer of thanksgiving for love
Lord God, we thank you that through our earthly lives you speak of your eternal life. We rejoice in the wonder of creation, the gift of life, the joy of love, and the many blessings that our relationships bring. Renew in us the fruits of your Holy Spirit; that we may know your love, joy and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Adapted from New Patterns for Worship, Church of England)

Four years ago the BBC put together a Valentine’s Day special on “Songs of Praise” with many different readings, hymns, anthems, secular songs, reflections, and bits of history – an exploration of many different facets of love.  The You Tube links are here. They are worth a look and listen.  Much of it was filmed at All Saints’, Evesham (another All Saints’!). Enjoy…and remember to tell those dear to you how much you love them.
